DID YOU KNOW that there is far more meaning to the word garment than merely an article of clothing to keep you warm?
For instance, Joseph’s coat was a long tunic, from the outstretched palms of the hands to the soles of the feet, not a coat of many colors: “And Israel loved Joseph more than all his sons, because he was a son of old age to him. And he made a robe (reaching to) the soles (of his) feet.” Genesis 37:3 (The Literal Translation)
Actually, the long tunic was prophetic. Joseph would one day become second-in-command of all Egypt, “And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand and put it on the hand of Joseph; and he clothed him with fine (white) linen robes and put a golden chain on his neck.” Genesis 41:42
Additionally, through unusual circumstances, Joseph’s son Ephraim would be designated the firstborn and become the spiritual head of the family. However, the brothers could only see the present: their father was placing their brother Joseph above them, since this type of garment was reserved for kings, priests and persons of rank, “ . . . his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, and they hated him. And they were not able to speak to him for peace.” Genesis 37:4
If you study the account of Joseph, you will discover that, in many ways, he is a picture of the Messiah. It is not a perfect picture, of course, because he was not the Messiah, but a picture nonetheless.
Having said that, let’s move forward to Revelation 1:13 for a comparison of the Son of Man’s garment with the one Israel made for Joseph: “And having turned, I saw seven golden lampstands, and in the midst of the seven lampstands (One) like the Son of Man, having been clothed to the feet, and having been girded with a golden girdle at the breasts.”
Also, a long tunic was the dress of the virgin daughters of the king, as we will see in 2 Samuel 13:18-19, after Tamar, the king’s daughter, had been raped by her half-brother Amnon. “And a long tunic was on her, for so the virgin daughters of the king usually dressed. And his attendant brought her robes outside, and bolted the door after her. And Tamar put ashes on her head, and tore the long tunic on her, and put her hand on her head, and left; going on and crying out.” She tore her long tunic because Amnon robbed her of her virginity, thus destroying her right to wear it.
The virgin daughter’s long tunic would have been made of white linen, as white linen is a symbol of purity.
“And His (the Messiah’s) garments became shining, very white like snow, such as fuller (lye soap) on earth is not able to whiten.” Mark 9:3. When we imitate the Messiah, walking in obedience to the Words of the Torah just as He did, we too will be given white garments of righteousness.
In Isaiah 61:10-11, YHVH speaks of His chosen ones: “Rejoicing I will rejoice in YHVH. My soul shall be joyful in Elohay (my El). For He clothed me (with) garments of salvation; He put on me the robe of righteousness, even as a bridegroom dons as a priest (his) headdress, and as a bride puts on her ornaments. For as the earth comes out with her buds, and as a garden causes that which is sown to grow, so Adonai YHVH will make righteousness and praise to grow before all the nations.”
What is righteousness? “My tongue shall speak Your Word, for all Your commands are righteousness.” Psalm 119:172
As you can see, one obtains righteousness by being obedient to the commands of YHVH. This does not replace the righteousness obtained through the sacrifice of the Messiah, but when we accepted the salvation He delivered to us, we also accepted the duty to learn the Way of YHVH and follow it in obedience just as the Messiah did. After all, He prayed, “ . . . let Your will be done on earth as it also is in Heaven.” Luke 11:2
If we desire to one day reside in the New Jerusalem, the holy city which will come down to earth out of Heaven, we will strive now to conduct ourselves on earth in accordance with the same rules that apply in Heaven -- the Torah of YHVH: “Your Word is settled in Heaven forever, YHVH.” Psalm 119:89
You have to earn your white robes, for they are not given to the disobedient! “Let no one deceive you with empty words, for through these the wrath of YHVH comes on the sons of disobedience.” Ephesians 5:6
A picture of what happens when our sins are being taken away can be seen in the description of Joshua (Hebrew: Y’hoshua) the high priest in Zechariah 3:1-4, “And he made me see Joshua the high priest standing before the Angel of YHVH, and Satan (the Adversary) standing at his right hand to accuse him. And YHVH said to the Adversary, ‘YHVH rebuke you, Adversary! And, YHVH who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a brand snatched from the fire?’ And Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and he stood before the Angel. And He answered and spoke to those who stood before Him, saying, ‘Take away the filthy garments from him.’ And He said to him, ‘Behold, I have caused your iniquity to pass from you, and I will clothe you with festal garments.’”
Note: (1) The definition of the word filthy = Hebrew #6674: as covered in excrement.
(2) Festal garments = Hebrew #4254, robe of state; from #2502, which includes the following definitions: to rescue, deliver, set free.
After Joshua had been washed and he had been clothed in the clean garments, he heard these instructions: “So says YHVH Tsabaot; ‘If you will walk in My ways, and if you will keep My charge, then you shall also judge My house, and shall also keep My courts, and I will give you room to walk among these who stand by.” Zechariah 3:7
These are the same instructions given to the Bride, who will rule and reign with Y’hoshua on the earth for the remainder of the 1,000 years after He returns as King of kings. However, at the beginning of the tribulation, the Bride will be caught away to Heaven, because she must be there to attend the coronation of Y’hoshua as King. The wedding ceremony will be held after the coronation.
One reference to this period can be found in Isaiah 26:19-20, “Your dead ones shall live, my dead body, they shall rise up. Awake and sing, dust dwellers; for the dew of lights is your dew; and the earth shall cast out departed spirits. Come, My people, go in your rooms (bridechamber) and shut your doors behind you. Hide for a little moment, until the fury (indignation) passes.” Compare this description with Mark 2:19a, “And Y’hoshua said to them, ‘Can the sons of the bridechamber fast while the groom is with them . . .?’ ”
And, in Revelation 19:6b-8, “Hallelujah! Because Adonai El Shaddai reigned. Let us rejoice and let us exult, and we will give glory to Him, because the marriage of the Lamb came, and His wife prepared herself. And it was given to her that she be clothed in fine linen, pure and bright. For the fine linen is the righteousness of the saints.”
Untold numbers of those who were not part of the Bride, but were left here on the earth, will accept the salvation of YHVH from the Deliverer, Y’hoshua the Messiah; and they will become obedient and righteous during the tribulation. It will be harder then, for most will be killed, but they will respond when they finally see the Truth -- no matter how great the cost! For it will be far better to encounter physical death here on earth than to be sentenced to suffer in the Lake of Fire for all eternity!
Further evidence about those wearing white garments: “And when He opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those having been slain for the Word of YHVH, and for the witness which they had. And they cried with a great voice, saying, ‘Until when, holy and true Master, do You not judge and take vengeance for our blood, from those dwelling on the earth?’ And there was given to each one a white robe. And it was said to them that they should rest yet a little time, until might be fulfilled also (the number) of their fellow-slaves and their brothers, those being about to be killed, even as they.” Revelation 6:9-11
“ . . . after these things I saw, and behold, a great crowd which no one was able to number them, out of every nation, even tribes and peoples and tongues, standing in front of the throne, and before the Lamb, having been clothed with white robes, and in their hands palm branches.” Revelation 7:9
“And one of the elders answered, saying to me, ‘These, the ones having been clothed in the white robes, who are they and from where did they come?’ And I said to him,’ Sir, you know.’ And he said to me, ‘These are those coming out of the great tribulation; and they washed their robes and whitened them in the blood of the Lamb.’ ” Revelation 9:13-14
At the end of the seven years of tribulation: “Who is this who comes from Edom with dyed garments from Bozrah, this One adorned in His clothing, bending in His great power? (It is) I, speaking in righteousness, mighty to save! Why is Your clothing red, and Your garments like one who treads in the winepress? I have trodden the winepress, I alone, and no man of the peoples was with Me. And I will tread them in My anger, and trample them in My fury: and their juice shall be spattered on My garments; and I will pollute all My clothes. For the day of vengeance is in My heart, and the year of My redeemed has come.” Isaiah 63:1-4
Confirmation: “ . . .and having been clothed in a garment which had been dipped in blood. And His name is called The Word of YHVH. And the armies in Heaven followed Him on white horses, being dressed in fine linen, white and pure. And out of His mouth goes forth a sharp sword, that with it He might smite the nations (the goyim). And He will shepherd them with an iron rod. And He treads the winepress of the wine of the anger and of the wrath of El Shaddai.” Revelation 19:13-15
Note: The sword of the Spirit is the Word of YHVH. Ref. Ephesians 6:17b
Again, in Zechariah 14:3-7, “And YHVH shall go out and fight against those nations, like the day He fought in the day of battle. And His feet shall stand in that day on the Mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east; and the Mount of Olives shall divide from its middle, from the east even to the west, a very great valley. And half of the mountain shall move toward the north, and half of it toward the south. And you shall flee to the valley of My mountains, for the valley of the mountains shall reach to Azal. And you shall flee as you fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah, king of Judah. And YHVH Elohay (my El) shall come, and all the saints with You. And it will be in that day, there shall not be light; the glorious ones will shrink. And it will be one day which shall be known to YHVH; not day and not night, but it will be there will be light at evening time.”
The return will occur at the beginning of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, at dusk as the new day begins. Instead of darkness, it will be light because of the brightness of His coming.
“And I will pour on the house of David, and on those living in Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of prayers. And they shall look on Me whom they have pierced; and they shall mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only (son), and (they) shall be bitter over Him, like the bitterness over the first-born.” Zechariah 12:10
“And YHVH shall be King over all the earth. In that day there shall be one YHVH, and His name one.” Zechariah 14:8-9
“Because of this I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of YHVH says, ‘Y’hoshua is a curse.’ And no one is able to say ‘Y’hoshua is YHVH,’ except by the Holy (Set-apart) Spirit.” 1 Corinthians 12:3.
Knowing that these days are fast approaching, which is more important: to clothe our earthly bodies with the finest clothing this world has to offer, or to walk in obedience to the Torah, not caring about this world’s goods, but working toward the day when we will be clothed in the Bride’s white garments of righteousness?
