THE WHOLE ARMOR OF YHVH
In most translations, titles have been substituted for the names of the Creator and the Messiah as they appear in the original language. The title of the Creator has been translated God; and the title the LORD has been substituted for the name of the Creator. His name is actually spelled yod-hay-vav-hay in Hebrew, and Y-H-V-H in English. Though the pronunciation is often disputed, our understanding of the pronunciation of the name is YAH-WHEY. The Messiah will be used instead of Christ (Greek). Both mean Anointed of YHVH. His Hebrew name is Y'hoshua, which means: YHVH IS DELIVERER.
Also, wherever the word Law appears in Scripture, it is the word Torah, which is defined in Hebrew as "instructions for having life." The Greek equivalent is Nomos.
Understanding the following verses is critical to the life of all who would walk with YHVH, and worship Him in Spirit and Truth. This is our life we are talking about, and not some game where people wake up in the morning and pretend to put on armor. The armor we are to put on is our lifestyle, and it is defined in Scripture completely.
VERSE 11: We are told to put on the whole armor of YHVH, in order to stand against the schemings of the devil.
VERSE 12: Our wrestling is against spiritual wickedness in high places, implying a spiritual battle. Therefore, we need spiritual weapons to fight the fight to win.
VERSE 13: Again, we are told to take up the whole armor of YHVH in order to resist in the evil day, and then it says "to stand." We must be able to identify each piece of the armor, and understand its function, in order to use it effectively.
VERSE 14(a): We are to stand, having girded our waist with truth. What is Truth?
". . . your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and your Torah is truth." [Psalm 119:142]
". . . You are near, YHVH, and all Your commandments are truth." [Psalm 119:151]
". . . The entirety of your Word is truth, and every one of your righteous judgments endures forever." [Psalm 119:160]
Therefore, we are to gird ourselves with the Word of Truth, the Torah.
VERSE 14(b): And we are to put on the breastplate of righteousness. What is righteousness?
". . .it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to observe all these commandments before YHVH our Creator, as He has commanded us." [Deuteronomy 6:25]
". . . YHVH is righteous, He loves righteousness; His countenance beholds the upright." [Psalm 11:7] ". . . All His commandments are righteousness." [Psalm 119:172]
The Word says that YHVH is righteous and His commandments are righteous; therefore it is righteousness for us if we obey His commandments, the Torah.
VERSE 15: Our feet are to be shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace. What is the gospel of peace?
"How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things." [Romans 10:15, quoted from Isaiah 52:7]
". . . Mercy and truth have met together, righteousness and peace have kissed." [Psalm 85:10]
". . .Great peace have those who love your Torah, and nothing causes them to stumble." [Psalm 119:165]
". . . My son, do not forget my Torah, but let your heart keep my commands; for length of days and long life and peace they will add to you." [Proverbs 3:1-2]
Learning and following the Torah brings peace.
VERSE 16: Above all, we are to take the shield of faith which will enable us to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. What is this faith that we are to use as a shield?
". . .His truth shall be your shield and buckler." [Psalm 91:4b]
"...You, YHVH, will bless the righteous; with favor You will surround him as with a shield." [Psalm 5:12]
"He stores up sound wisdom for the upright, He is a shield to those who walk uprightly." [Proverbs 2:7]
". . . Every word of YHVH is pure, He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him." [Proverbs 30:5]
". . . You have also given me the shield of Your salvation, Your right hand has held me up, Your gentleness has made me great." [Psalm 18:35]
When we have been regenerated from above, we have received the shield of salvation from YHVH through the Messiah. When we trust Him completely, knowing that He will do that which He promised, He will be our shield. And, if we trust Him, we will be obedient to His Word, walking uprightly.
VERSE 17: We are instructed to take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of YHVH. What is the helmet of salvation? In Isaiah 59:16-17, we are given a prophecy of the Messiah. We are told YHVH saw that there was no intercessor; therefore, His own arm brought salvation for Him, and His own righteousness sustained Him. He put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation.
". . . But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation." [1 Thessalonians 5:8]
Romans 5:18 says that the condemnation that came through the sin of Adam (disobedience) was removed through the righteous act of Messiah (obedience). This salvation saves us from the death that entered the world at the same time and spread to all men.
Regarding the sword of the spirit, Romans 7:12 says, ". . . The Torah is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good."
Romans 7:14 says, ". . . The Torah is spiritual."
Spiritual = filled with, and governed by, the Spirit of YHVH.
VERSE 18: We come to the last part of the armor: Prayer. "Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit . . ."
"Those who forsake the Torah praise the wicked, but such as keep the Torah contend with them." [Proverbs 28:4]
"One who turns away his ear from hearing the Torah, even his prayer is an abomination." [Proverbs 28:9]
"But to the wicked the Creator says: 'What right have you to declare My statutes, or take My covenant in your mouth, seeing you hate instruction and cast My words behind you?' " [Psalm 50:16-17]
YHVH hears the prayers of the upright ones, those who are obedient to His Torah.
In summary, we believe that our number one weapon in spiritual warfare is our obedience to the Torah (instructions of YHVH). As the Scriptures have shown, our obedience to the Torah is our righteousness. In fact, we have seen that each detail of the armor is the Torah of YHVH.
The fulfillment that Messiah accomplished was the removal of condemnation that brought death. He also became our High Priest, who is now our Mediator when we sin. And since sin is transgression of the Torah (1 John 3:4), we now confess our sin to YHVH and He is faithful to forgive us. We then bear fruits worthy of repentance, which is our obedience. By the way, to repent means to turn away from transgressing the Torah and turning back in obedience to it. Remember, the prophets always called for the children to repent and turn back in obedience to the Torah of YHVH.
The Torah does not remove the condemnation that came into the world; but now that it is removed by Messiah, the Torah shows us how to live as a new creation in Y'hoshua, the Anointed of YHVH.
